Art Psychotherapy
Art Therapy/ Psychotherapy is provided at The Center by our registered, trained clinical Art Therapist. Art Therapy manifests the benefits of creativity and art making within a therapeutic relationship in the service of the client’s growth and healing. The art in art therapy is different to conventional art: It has nothing to do with aesthetics or artistic merit/experience but more about personal meaning making, authentic self-expression, creativity and processes of flow & mindfulness (when engaged with sensory manipulation of art materials). The Art therapist facilitates this unique relationship to guide the client in their creations to scaffold deeper understanding-healing-change; mental flexibility and creative problem solving in addressing their unique issues.
The effect of different art making processes in corresponding brain regions has been evidenced in neuroscience research to build new synapses, improve hemispherical integration, promote emotional healing, executive functioning and nervous system regulation. In short, art psychotherapy can be viewed as a type of expressive behavioural therapy that facilitates insight, change, holistic healing/integration & self-actualisation. Art therapy is versatile and can be provided as stand-alone support or part of a multi-disciplinary team to address:
